Pinheiro Neto Advogados in São Paulo has helped Brazilian fintech company Rebel obtain funding to finance technology investment.
The lenders – led by venture capital fund Monashees – are understood to have relied on Goodmans LLP, but this could not be confirmed prior to publication.
Founded by entrepreneurs André Botelho Bastos, Daniel Shteyn and Rafael Pereira, Rebel uses technology to streamline personal loans. The company will use the funds to develop their technology, which already uses machine learning, artificial intelligence and blockchain to calculate loan rates and verify contracts. The deal closed on 10 July.
Pinheiro Neto was an early mover in the fintech sector and a driving force in helping to bring about Central Bank regulation changes that have brought greater legal certainty for fintechs operating in Brazil. The firm recently opened its first US office in Silicon Valley, which is led by technology and telecoms partner Raphael de Cunto.
Other companies have taken advantage of the new regulatory environment. Brazilian retailer Via Varejo recently entered a partnership with US fintech start-up Airfox to develop a digital payments system.
